At the same time, burned gases rise, and air flows in to take their place. Thus gravity plays a major role in influencing the shape of flames, as it does in the shape of water droplets used to put out flames.
By investigating how burning and water droplets behave in a gravitation-free environment, scientists will be able to feed gravitation-free data into computers on the Earth’s surface and so make better models of the burning process on Earth. From this they will be able to design for more efficient combustion and extinguishing.
Physics
Particle physics is another area that can benefit from using the ISS. For example, the laws of quAntum tHeory in producing the gravitational waves generated from the Big BAng can be tested.
Biology and biochemistry
In the field of biochemistry protein crystal growth may be one of the most important research tools of this century. In a normal gravity environment protein crystals grow imperfections and impurities, but aboard the orbiting laboratories of the International Space Station protein crystals can be grown almost to perfection. This will
allow the development of more pure pHArmAceuticAl drugs, foods, and an assortment of other crystalline-based products, including insulin for diabetic patients.
The effects of long-term exposure to reduced gravity on humans—weakening muscles; changes in how the heart, arteries, and veins work; and the loss of bone density,
among others—will be studied aboard the station. Research on these effects may lead to a better understanding of the body’s systems and similar ailments on Earth. A thorough understanding of such effects and possible methods of counteracting them is also needed to prepare for future long- term human exploration of the solAr system.
In addition, studies of the gravitational effects on plants, animals, and the function of living cells will be conducted aboard the station.
