 Pirs, another piece of the International Space Station, arrives.
Until this point only hardware had been delivered. But before people could inhabit the ISS, food, water, and other life support supplies had to be in place. The fourth flight to the Space Station was launched in May 2000. It delivered the supplies needed in preparation for the arrival of the station’s first permanent crew and the Zvezda service module.
In July 2000 the Russian Space Agency, using a Proton rocket, launched the Zvezda service module, and it docked with the first linked pair of modules (Zarya and Unity) already in orbit. This fifth flight also brought a third major component of the station.
Shuttle missions in September and October delivered supplies, trusses to help attach modules together, and other gear.
The station’s first permanent crew (Expedition 1) arrived in November. This crew added the first set of American solar arrays.
The Destiny laboratory module was added in February 2001.
In March 2001 crews were swapped, and the first multipurpose logistics module (reusable cargo carriers built by the Italian Space Agency), Leonardo, was delivered to the station. Logistics modules can spend months on the ISS before being returned to Earth.
In April the station’s robot arm (RMS) and the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module arrived. With the robot arm came the chance to attach the station’s joint airlock in July.
