Mains

What are mains? The electricity you find in your home and supplied to light and power sockets.

Plug socket connected to the electrical mains.

Mains electricity is used for many things around the home. It is normally 240volts. This is a much higher voltage than that produced by batteries. The reason for this is that the things we have in the home use a lot more power than batteries could supply.

Mains electricity is also called AC, meaning alternating current. This is a special kind of supply that is convenient for many of the appliances we have around the home.
