The way to see what happens to a sound is to compare it to what happens when we drop a pebble in a pond.

The ripples spread out in all directions. The length of the ripple rings also gets greater and the ripple height gets smaller.

The same kind of thing happens invisibly to sound in the air. As the vibrations spread out, so they get smaller and the sound is quieter.
