Only some gases combine with oxygen to burn, that is they give out heat and light. These gases are called fuels.
If you use oil central heating, or even burn coal and wood in a hearth, you are getting your warmth thanks to a burning gas! This is because, when solid and liquid fuels are heated they give off gases, and it is the gases that burn in the air.
