Fuel gases give out heat and light when the gas combines with the oxygen in the air.

Show this is true by placing a glass jar over a burning candle. Watch the candle flame and see what happens.

(It was this kind of experiment that allowed famous scientists of the past to find out that oxygen existed, when they couldn't see it, smell it or taste it!)
