Q1: How do thermometers make use of the way that liquids shrink and swell?

[Answer]

All solids and liquids will change in size, that is in volume, as they change in temperature.

They will swell as they get hotter and shrink as they get colder.

If you put a liquid in a narrow tube, it will shrink and swell only along the tube, making the change easier to see. This is how thermometers work.
