All plants make their own food from substances in the air and soil.
Animals cannot make their own food from the air and soil like plants, so they must eat plants (or other animals) to live.
Food is used as a supply of energy. Every living thing needs energy just to stay alive. If it moves it needs far more energy. It also needs energy to grow.
