Many things have springiness built into them. Sometimes a flat board can be used as a spring. A diving board, for example, is a flat spring.
Flat springs are often called leaf springs because they are used in groups, like the leaves in a book. Steel leaf springs were first used on carriages drawn by horses. They're now used on cars, trucks and trains.
