Q1: Why are metal coils so useful?

[Answer]

Springs come in lots of forms. But many springs are made of metal coils. That is because these springs can push and pull.

Metals are naturally springy materials. But you can make the springiness much more useful if the metal is made into a coil.

A clock spring is an example of a pushing coil. It pushes the clock works around as it tries to uncoil. There is a pulling coil in a door handle.
