Q1: What is the difference between rock and soil?

[Answer]

The whole of the Earth's surface is made up of rock.

But we only see rocks in places like quarries and in cliffs at the seaside. This is because, everywhere else, the solid rock is covered in a layer of more powdery, loose material. This is soil.

Soil is only a metre or so thick and it's mostly made from broken up rock.
