Anything you use to make things is called a material.

The earliest people – the Stone Age people – used only natural materials, such as stone and wood, clay and animal skins, bones and wool.

Even with these simple materials they made some beautiful things such as axes. But 3,000 years ago people discovered how to get metals from rocks. About 100 years ago another new material was discovered – plastic.
