Houseplants have not simply been brought in from a garden and put in a pot.
The 'weather' is very different in your house to a garden. The centrally-heated air is always dry and the light is often weaker because it only comes in through the windows.
Many common houseplants come from drier parts of the world and which naturally grow in the shade. It is not kind to overwater them.
