Q1: Why do plants often continue to grow if a piece is cut off?

[Answer]

It is a risky process to reproduce with seeds. There is a good chance that the seed will not survive to germinate. It may land on rocky ground that is too dry for germination or it may land in a river and be washed away to sea where no land plants survive.

Many plants that produce seeds also have a second way of reproducing. They grow bits of themselves into new plants.
