At the same time that dinosaurs lived on land, flying reptiles soared across the skies. These were the pterosaurs that later evolved into birds.
The best-known name for some pterosaurs is pterodactyl, although these were just some of many flying reptiles. All flying reptiles had a greatly extended fourth finger on each hand, and flaps of skin between the arms and this finger made the wings. It is likely that pterosaurs had difficulty taking off and landing and mostly glided across the skies. They could walk on land, using their 'elbows'.
