All parts of the body are made of cells that need a supply of food and oxygen. Each cell also needs to get rid of the wastes it makes.
If the supply of food and oxygen and the removal of wastes is slow, the cell can die.
The supply and removal service is provided by the blood, but it must move quickly round the body to meet the needs of the cells. The pump that moves the blood is the heart.
