In early medieval times, important people would have stone likenesses of themselves carved to go on top of their tombs so they could be remembered. These tombs were then placed in the church so that they would be as close as possible to God.
This is a typical style of effigy. It's a nobleman dressed in his knight's armour of the 13th century.
