Statues, together with paintings, are religious art. They try to help people to gather their thoughts on God, Jesus and the saints.
They have long been a part of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions, although they're less common in Protestant churches.
Statues are positioned away from the nave so as not to distract people taking part in a service.
