The area around many churches, especially old ones, is used as a graveyard. The area is often called "God's acre".

Graves are usually dug facing Jerusalem (more or less east-west) with the headstone at the western end.

In some graveyards there is also a communal marker - a memorial - for those of the parish who lost their lives in the World Wars.
