After half a century of raiding, the Vikings invaded.

In England the invasion was mainly by Danes in 865 when King Guthrum brought over a Great Army and landed in SE England. He meant to take over the land of the Saxons and stay.

In Scotland, Norwegian Vikings attacked the coastal islands and quickly took them over, but they made less progress on the mainland where Scottish clans fought them off.
