Viking lands were poor and times could be harsh. Clans fought one another for territory and so became used to fighting for gain. Those who won made their captives slaves.
Vikings began to think that the best way to get wealthier was to take what they wanted from others. This changed some Vikings into pirates who raided the shores of distant lands in search of booty. Vikings were feared because they arrived without warning in their fast boats.
