However, her father, king Högne, has promised her to Hothbrodd, the son of another king, Granmar. Helgi is not happy with this and he gathers a force of warriors who are loyal to him including his brother Sinfjötli. They fight with Högne, his son Dag, Granmar and all of Granmar's sons.

Everyone dies except for Helgi, Sinfjötli and Högne's son Dag.

Sigrún doesn't mind that all of her family except Dag have been slain and is happy to be true to Helgi.

Sigrún and Helgi marry and they have several sons. Dag, however, knows that honour demands that he avenge his father. The god Odin lends him a spear, and he dutifully stabs Helgi with it. Then he goes to Sigrún to tell her his duty is done, but this makes her give this curse:
