For hundreds of years people had little money and bought things rarely. They also mostly grew their own food. If you wanted something, you had it made for you because there were no machines to mass-produce things cheaply.

All of this meant that there was a need for a local market, and a need for workshops, but no need for shops selling finished goods. But in Victorian times all this changed because of factories, and because people were wealthier…
