In the 1870s the main railway lines between cities had been completed.
Railway owners noticed that cities were still very overcrowded and that many people were becoming wealthier. They began building lines from the city to the surrounding countryside and then building houses near their new stations. They then offered cheap fares into the city.
As a result, cities spread out into the countryside quickly and the new places became known as suburbs.
