A family has just been thrown off the land they worked by a farmer who is fencing in his farm. He doesn't need as many people.

The family arrive in the city with just a few pence to start to rent a room. There is father, mother and four children aged 12, 9, 7 and 5.

They hear there is work in the local factory, but that the owner only wants children because he can pay them less.
