The early Victorian city was not like the sprawling city of our times. It was still quite small and from almost all parts of it you would still have been able to see the surrounding countryside.
On the edge were cottages and smallholdings, then rows of poorly built brick houses.
The centre was dominated by tall factories with belching chimneys, lining canals filled with barges carrying coal, iron, wheat and everything else a city needed.
