The Columbia was not as we see it today. Before the dams it was a series of formidable rapids.

Many people put their wagons onto rafts at the Dalles, thankful to stop walking.

The rafts took them to what is now Portland. This was the end of the Oregon Trail. From here many went south along the fertile Willamette Valley. Others still had California in mind.
