For many Americans, the journey of Lewis and Clark is the story of the beginning of a great adventure, the great movement westward to settle the entire continent.
The Corps of Discovery is also the story of a group of people who accomplished a great feat by working together as a team. Except for one death through illness, all the Corp members survived the difficult journey – even the baby. This teamwork even included treating a Native American woman and a slave as equal members of the group, and allowing them an equal say in making decisions – something that would have been unheard of in the cities of the time.
