The Corps of Discovery traveled 1600 miles up the lower Missouri across flat lands that were still part of the Great Plains.

They met a number of Native Americans, not all of whom were friendly.

Finally, just as winter was starting, they arrived at a Mandan village, and found hospitable people who allowed them to build a fort to see out the long winter.
