In the first week of September, the party met some Sioux (now called the Lakota), who made it clear that they were not welcome.
They turned away the gifts and wanted a boat instead. It was an ugly encounter, and eventually Clark felt forced to draw his sword, and Lewis turned the keelboat’s swivel gun on the Sioux.
The threat was enough, and the Corps went on. But it was a fright, and now winter was fast approaching and they were still in the Great Plains.
