By the 26th June the Corps of Discovery had reached the Kansas River, a branch of the Missouri. This was all still flat land that would later be known as the Great Plains. By 21 July, they reached the mouth of the Platte.
On August 2, a party of Oto and Missouri Native Americans arrived at the expedition’s camp near the Platte. The two sides exchanged greetings and gifts. This was later called Council Bluffs.
Then, on August 20, tragedy struck when expedition member Sergeant Charles Floyd died of a ruptured appendix.
