For many centuries the land around a village had been farmed in three huge 'open' fields.

Each farmer was allowed to farm a few narrow strips in each field. After the harvest his animals could also share the grazing on the fields.

Many people were needed for this way of farming and it didn't provide a lot of surplus to sell. The landowners wanted to change this.
