The Age of Discovery was started by Prince Henry of Portugal in 1420. His country was leading the world in new ship design and Portugal lay opposite Africa.
Henry knew that he had to send ships south along the coast of Africa if he was to find a new route to China. This is why he was called Henry the Navigator.
As his sailors went along the coast, they claimed all the coast for Portugal, including the coast later called the Gold Coast.
