Q1: Why was it useful to have several sails?

[Answer]

The Portuguese word for barge is carrack. This was the word everyone in Tudor times used for the new kind of sea-going boat.

It was bigger than fishing boats and it had higher sides, especially at the front and back. The front end was called the forecastle and the back end was the sterncastle.

It also had several sails – a way of going faster.

Best of all, it had a great hold.
