Europeans – and especially the Portuguese – looked for better designs.
They started with the Arab dhow (which has a triangular sail), and then tried to build a ship that was like a barge – a goods carrier.
By the start of Tudor times they had been successful and their ship had high sides and a huge hold for goods (compared to anything before).
