At this time only patches of land had been cleared for farming and most of England was still forest.
The Anglo-Saxons arrived by boat and so they naturally settled first by the rivers, taking over any land the British had cleared or starting new clearings in the forest.
They looked for good places to defend, such as islands and forks between rivers.
Some British were captured and made slaves, others were left alone.
