From about AD 425, the barbarians (as the Romans called them) from northern Europe (now Denmark, Germany and Holland) began to arrive along the east and south shores. They were called the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. The Angles would eventually give their name to the country we now call England.
People from Scotland (the Picti) and Ireland (the Scotti) also raided from the north.
The Roman British were helpless.
