The Romans realised that they needed to keep control of Britain.
They did this by building forts – Roman police stations – to house a large garrison.
They made sure troops could get around quickly by building superb new straight roads.
In places where the frontier was difficult to hold they also built walls, of which the most famous is Hadrian's Wall.
In later Roman times, towns also had walls.
