Q1: What was special about Roman roads?

[Answer]

The Romans knew that, if they wanted to unite a country and keep it under control, the way to do this was to make it easy for people, goods – and troops – to get about. So they built a network of roads – the Roman version of our motorways.

The Romans built roads which were perfectly straight wherever possible. The roads had foundations made from a strong layer of stones so they could be used in all weather.
