Many castles now lie in ruins. You may wonder why this is and when they became ruins. In fact, most have become ruins relatively recently. Almost none were made ruins in medieval times.
Some were destroyed during the English Civil War of the 17th century so they could not be used for defence. Some fell into ruin simply because they were no longer used. People then began to scavenge the stone, lead and wood for other buildings. Many fell into decay only a century or two ago because their owners could not afford the repairs.
