Q1: Why was it sometimes useful to build a castle by the sea?

[Answer]

Another, quite different idea, was to build by the sea.

There was sense in this, for the castle could be provisioned by boat if it were to be under siege from the land. A coastal castle could then withstand any siege, as Harlech castle was to prove.

Edward's 'ring of stone' castles were often built in this location, but others used the idea as well, such as Bamburgh and Scarborough.
