Q1: Why did castle-builders often choose rocky crags or bends in rivers?

[Answer]

The first priority was to find a good defensive site, for a castle was meant to withstand attack.

In Europe, many castles were built on rocky crags. Edinburgh and Stirling are magnificent examples. But it was rare to find such places in lowland England, where most English castles were built. Instead, castles were built near to rivers, using river loops as natural moats. Durham and Warkworth are fine examples.
