Tenochtitlan was one of the most advanced cities in the world. Its island, five miles square, was connected to the mainland by three earth bridges, or causeways. Canals were used as streets, and people travelled everywhere by canoe, just like modern Venice in Italy.
They had palaces, gardens, fountains, a royal zoo and a huge market. Aqueducts brought fresh water, and barges took sewage away for use as fertilisers.
