You can find a wide variety of homes in Ostia. There were, for example, large homes for the wealthy. A large family house was called a 'domus'.Then there were blocks of apartments. These were called 'insulae'. They were rented by wealthy landlords, and each renter usually had just one room.
People got their water from fountains. With no space to cook, most people living in insulae got their food from take-away shops. Over 800 shops have been found in Ostia.
