The forum in Rome was a low lying marshy valley between hills. It was drained and paved over and some of the most fabulous buildings in the Roman Empire built there.
The forum was a mixture of temples and open spaces and basilicas (covered markets and offices).
Overlooking the forum was the home of the emperor.
