Ancient Rome was such a complicated place, and its buildings so densely packed, it is almost impossible to imagine it.
Rome was a gigantic city, perhaps a million people, and most of them lived in tightly packed apartment blocks. Then there were areas of domuses for the wealthy and the area for the emperor. The central buildings were around the Forum.
