War was common in ancient Greek times.
In part, this was because the Greek cities became rivals.
But they were also attacked by the Persians. When this happened, the cities forgot their rivalries and fought together.
The ancient Greek soldier was called a hoplite. He wore heavy armour and battered the enemy to defeat.
