Remember that summers are hot, but winters cool or cold. So in summer it made sense to wear lightweight linen clothes, while wool was more suitable in winter.

All but the most wealthy made their own clothes, consisting of a simple tunic (called a chiton, made of a square of cloth, held in place by brooches and pins at the shoulders and a belt round the waist.) They also had a draped cloak. Both men and women wore basically the same style.
