The first paintings that still survive were made an astonishing 30,000 years ago.
We find them in caves in France and Spain. They show amazing skill, so these cannot be the first paintings. Many must have been made before, but perhaps they were all in the open and have been washed away by the weather. We can now only just guess as what made them do it....
