How developed were these early people?
One way to judge is to look in the caves where some of them painted. The best surviving examples show a wealth of animals. They are painted with charcoal and also red and yellow colours made of ground up rocks mixed with natural plant and animal gums.
Their art is stunning. The animals appear to come alive on the walls of the caves.
